Wellcraft 35 Scarab Tournament

Based on Scarab's racing hull design, this boat handles well and can really scoot.

December 1, 2006

Although this boat was designed for those warriors of the kingfish tours, this brawny center console is just as happy fishing recreationally. Serious offshore anglers seemingly need an inexhaustible number of vertical rod holders to make sure they always have the right weapon ready to go at all times, and the 35 doesn't disappoint, with a total of 18 in-gunwale holders or rocket launchers, and with storage for four more under the gunwales. The transom is all business, with a 21-gallon sealed and pressurized baitwell, under-hatch storage and a bait prep station with raw water washdown. There are tackle storage compartments scattered throughout the cockpit, and the transom bench seat folds away and deploys in about a second. The extra-long bench seats up front have 6-foot fish boxes underneath, and there's a pair of giant dry storage compartments set into the deck. Live bait aficionados will opt for the available 40-gallon livewell behind the leaning post, which features a flip-up bolster to switch from standing to sitting.

Based on Scarab's racing hull design, this boat handles well and can really scoot. With triple Evinrude E-TEC 250s, the 35 Tournament can hit 56 mph, even with a full 400 gallons of fuel on board. The racing heritage is evident with high-performance Livorsi controls and standard trim tab indicator lights. There's also a 35 Sport model available with a cuddy cabin that's more attuned to the recreational fishing crowd. www.wellcraft.com. - A.J.
