First Impressions

How do you improve on an already acclaimed boat model? By adding space, features and power. On a daylong test of the new Yamaha SX230 High Output on Georgia's Lake Allatoona, the com-pany's latest model lives up to its reputation. The new deck design is well-thought-out, maximizing space and offering an innovative J-shaped seating arrangement that's great for socializing. Beyond the layout, the big story on the new 230 SX is the addition of Yamaha's first head compartment. It can accommodate a portable toilet and can also be used as a changing area or storage locker. As expected on a boat this size, space in the compartment is limited, but the added flexibil-ity this section offers boaters easily compensates for any shortcomings.

SX230HOSettling into the captain's chair, you pause to adjust the flip-up seat, which raises and drops smoothly thanks to a newly designed mechanism. Pushing the throttles forward, the twin High Output engines come to life. Standard for '07, the engines deliver 320 hp and get the SX230 moving in a hurry en route to a top speed in the low 50s. The boat's a blast to ride but also fun at rest, whether hanging out in the wider, longer bow section or Yamaha's award-winning stern lounge area. With the SX230 High Output, Yamaha has again delivered a winner — and at a price well below many comparable bowriders.
