Sweetwater 2586 RE I/O
By Randy Scott
T
he new 2586 RE I/O is cutting a new wake for Sweetwater — the value-priced pontoon
company that has traditionally offered all-outboard powered models. This new sterndrive-powered
25-footer offers a choice of either standard 23-inch-diameter pontoons rated for up to 135 hp, or
optional 25-inch-diameter tubes that increase the boat’s power rating to 220 hp for optimum
performance. The boat delivers a stable ride, and although as you’d expect, it doesn’t maneuver as
well as a runabout, but it’s well-mannered for a pontoon boat when it comes to turns. Strategically
placed lifting strakes, full-length underdeck skin and power steering are among the model’s
highlights.
In addition to its sterndrive propulsion, the 2586 RE I/O reflects some of the other upgrades
sweeping through the Sweetwater line. Most noteworthy is a newly-designed helm station with
well-placed instrumentation, a convenient built-in trash receptacle, and sitting the new pilot’s
chair offers the luxury of adjustable armrests. Its rear-entry design and three-step swim ladder is
ideal for swimmers. An optional ski tow bar lets you tap into this I/O’s full watersports
potential. To keep your wakeboards and skis stowed out of the way, but also readily available, a
wakeboard/ski holder can be attached to the tow bar.
The 236 RE I/O’s 8-foot-6-inch beam affords the most deck space available in a trailerable boat. To accommodate the boat’s 12-passenger rating, there’s a stern chaise lounge and two forward lounges port and starboard — all of which you’ll likely find extremely comfortable. Other key features include a Jensen CD stereo system with MP3 input, docking lights, a changing room, and a 37-gallon fuel tank for an extended day out on the water.
