Boating Under The Influence
By Jennifer Dennard
Under the direction of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and
the U.S. Coast Guard, the Southern California Research Institute (SCRI) is currently creating and
validating standardized field sobriety tests for boaters suspected of driving while intoxicated.
Initial results of SCRI’s study will be available in 2009, and implementation of the established
tests may begin after 2010.
Currently there is no federal field sobriety standard for boat operators. The Missouri State Water Patrol is the only water patrol agency in the country that breathalyzes boaters while aboard.
