Ramping Together

By Jennifer Dennard

In an effort to regain access to the Clarks Bridge Park public boat ramp on the shore of Lake Lanier, more than 12 volunteers came together recently to build a temporary extension to the existing ramp, which had been rendered useless as a result of the severe drought.

Under the direction of Kerry Hicks, proprietor of the nearby Smokin’ Fisherman bait shop, the volunteers poured 43 yards of concrete and installed a 40-foot steel ramp that extends the ramp nearly 8 feet into the lake. Boaters now have three ramps to choose from at the park, including those at Shoal Creek and Tidwell.

Hicks, with permission from the city of Gainesville and Hall County, took it upon himself to raise money and gather the volunteers. He has raised more than $3,000 so far and is still seeking contributions for the project, which cost $4,500.
