Boat Buyer's Guide 2014

Pontooners looking to hit the happy convergence of price and performance with a dash of plush thrown in will be looking hard at Lowe’s SS 210 SL. The Stern L-lounge (SL) floorplan maximizes passenger seating in the stern with an extra-long port-side/stern settee that gives the usually solitary driver someone to talk to. An adjacent standard cockpit table provides plenty of snacking real estate and can be stowed away when not needed. There’s still room left over aft on this sub-22-footer for an expansive sunpad for sunning at the local raft-up.

The port gate is wheelchair accessible and sits slightly more forward than usual, which does shorten the port-side chaise lounge but still gives a 6-footer enough room to stretch out thanks to a curved section at the bow that allows taller recliners to cheat their feet toward the centerline. If you prefer, you can option twin port pedestal fishing seats for guests who want to wet a line. To starboard is the longer layback lounge that has plenty of storage under the flip-up seat bottoms. Dark blue accent panels on the tan overstuffed furniture give the interior some visual pop.

Our test boat features the XL Package, which gives owners triple 25-inch tubes along with a rough-water package with lifting strakes and spray deflectors. Combined with Mercury’s 150 hp FourStroke, which uses a simple, non-supercharged design to deliver strong linear power, the SS 210 reached plane in just 2.5 seconds with virtually no bowrise. Time to 30 mph was 6.9 seconds, and it reached a top speed of 38.3 mph. Its best cruise speed was around 28 mph, where we could trim the bow up a bit to reduce wetted surface.

At the acrylic helm console, you’ll find a Fusion RA50 MP3 stereo that drives a standard pair of speakers, but upgrading to the four-speaker RA200 will raise the party factor to its rightful place. Choose at least a 150 hp motor with the XL tube package, and you have to add the optional ski tow to bring the SS 210 SL to its full potential as a competent watersports platform. For an added dash of style, replace the carpet with the optional Seagrass surface and option the chrome package for added graphics, LED lighting, docking lights and lighted cupholders.
