Pontoons

By: Alan Jones

If ever a pontoon were a party waiting to happen, it’s the Premier 275 Intrigue, with its massive 10-foot-wide beam and 27-foot, 5-inch length. Even your pistol of a brother-in-law can do his John Travolta, white-jacket-swinging dance routine without violating your guests’ personal space. And yes, thanks to the monster Alpine six-speaker stereo system with a 10-inch subwoofer, spontaneous dance parties will be busting out on a regular basis. And when it’s break time, guests can lounge in style on the U-shaped stern settee that features twin rear chaise lounges.

When it’s time to shift into watersports mode, the center sectional of the stern lounge relocates to the port boarding-gate area for easy access to the rear platform, which has been lengthened for 2012. Our test boat is decked out in synthetic teak for good looks and easy maintenance, and is equipped with a huge optional ski tow that rivals the height of a wakeboard tower. A five-step ladder makes it easy to reboard after a set.

Premier will rig the pontoon for any engine brand, and ours has the 300 hp Mercury Verado Pro on the engine bracket built into the center tube. Also delivering a performance assist is the optional PTX tube package that features a monstrous 36-inch center tube with a flat planing surface and lifting strakes on the insides of the 27-inch outside tubes. We got on plane quickly in 2.9 seconds and reached 30 mph in 7.3 seconds. Top speed was 44 mph, which is fast considering the massive platform the engines were pushing. But the fun really begins when you crank the 275 Intrigue hard over. Trimming it up a little gets the sharp leading edges out of the water, and when you whip it into a corner it leans over like a sportboat — far enough to lift the outside tube out of the water. The helm sits high thanks to the Command View platform and gives the driver an unobstructed forward view. Without getting up, the skipper can deploy the optional 12-foot Power Bimini top with the push of a button. To port, there's a pair of new-for-2012 Flexsteel 10-Star captain’s chairs with sculpted armrests that are so comfortable you’ll want one for your house.
