Bill Would Phase Out Boat Taxes in Kansas by 2016

Taxes on watercraft registered in Kansas would be phased out over the next three years under a bill introduced in the state House of Representatives last week.Voters in November approved a constitutional amendment clearing the way for the Legislature to change how watercraft are taxed. Currently, county property taxes are assessed on 30 percent of a watercraft’s appraised value. Amendment proponents argued that Kansas’ tax rates were far higher than neighboring states', resulting in boat owners registering their vessels out of state.
