If you Google “South Bay Pontoons,” near the top of the page you’ll see a YouTube video of a 600 hp South Bay HR running at 71.6 miles per hour. Our test South Bay 722 CR with a Mercury 90 hp four-stroke is slightly slower. But when you boil down the true essence of pontooning, it’s not how fast you get there, it’s the quality of the journey. And no matter what your timetable is, South Bay’s got the right setup.

This year, the 722 CR is sporting some new accoutrements, like the deliciously rich Black Cherry color. Drivers can sit behind the SB 3 package helm that has all the bells and whistles you need along with a stainless steel destroyer wheel that sports a spinner knob – something you usually see on fishing boats. But after cranking the wheel on the Mercury outboard you see why. With only rack and pinion steering it’s stiffer than a preoiled Tin Man. Fortunately you can upgrade to the Baystar hydraulic system for easy cruising.

With a fuel-efficient Mercury EFI 90 hp four-stroke and two-tube setup, you are looking at a quiet, smoothcruising ‘toon with a top speed of almost 25 mph, which is still fast enough to scare small children on inflatables. Despite its modest power, the 722 planes quickly and rises gently on plane in only 3.8 seconds. Should you choose a quicker path in life, South Bay has a Sport Performance Package that features lifting strakes, a full-aluminum underskin to reduce drag and a ski tow bar. Couple that with the max 115 hp and you’re easily capable of going skiing. Equip it with the Trifecta Triple Tube option along with a max 225 hp outboard and you’ll be flying.

With our rig, relaxing and enjoying the scenery and comfort is what it’s all about and with twin couches in the bow and an L-lounge that’s padded and upholstered, you’re smellin’the roses.
