I'm moving to the coast in Rhode Island and taking my 24-foot center console with me. I'm going to keep the boat in the water, so I have to paint the bottom, which has never been painted. What's the procedure?

There are five basic steps: cleaning, degreasing, sanding, priming and painting. First, wash the bottom thoroughly with soap and warm water. Then wipe the surface with a solvent wash or degreaser to remove traces of waxy mold release. Next, sand lightly using 120 grit paper and wipe free of dust. Now consider an epoxy barrier coat that will seal the fiberglass surface and prevent blistering problems (prep the surface according to the maker's instructions). Finish with the bottom paint of your choice, checking for compatibility with the barrier coat.

When you're degreasing the bottom, change cleaning cloths frequently, so you don't smear old mold release around on a dirty rag. Also consider a no-sand primer as an alternative to sanding.
