For much of last summer, Mark Kwikkle, co-owner of Pop ‘N Docs in Decatur, Nebraska, watched as the Missouri River crept closer and closer, threatening to destroy his entire business, and it came pretty close.
“The water would start to come up the boat ramp and go back down, then one day it just came up to the top and then it started going through the lot and that was it,” said Kwikkle.
At one point, flood waters reached as high as the back deck, and more than two feet of water rushed inside the restaurant, destroying everything from dry wall to ceiling fans.
“The first thing in my mind was, we’re not going to make it. Everything was just so daunting,” said Kwikkle.
