Upcoming Stratford Hall Program to Detail Heroics of Medal-Winning African American Sailor

In March of 1865, near the Civil War’s end, ships in the Union Navy’s Potomac Flotilla cruised up Westmoreland County’s Mattox Creek to attack Confederates there.

After 70 Union foot soldiers were deposited on shore, a small boat armed with a howitzer and rowed by several naval crewmen headed up a different fork of the creek and discovered three seemingly abandoned schooners.
