The Art of Augusta

Boats on the water have always been a familiar sight in Milford, Del. The town once sustained a flourishing shipbuilding industry on the Mispillion River. Today, of the seven original shipbuilding sites, only

Vinyard Shipbuilding Co. remains. One of the first boats Vinyard produced in its luxury yacht line was Augusta, built out of native white cedar in 1927. In honor of the town’s maritime heritage, a three-year art project, hosted by Downtown Milford Inc., installed 18 boat models shaped like Augusta around Mispillion Riverwalk. The 4-foot fiberglass models are decorated by area artists and portray scenes of Milford and the waterfront.

  1. Thanks for sharing our wonderful public art project! Milford is very proud of our shipbuilding heritage and also of our cultural preservation of the river and its history through art!
