Prepping a Successful Install

By: Grid Michal

QuestionI have an aluminum pontoon boat and would like to install a depth/fishfinder. Are there any special precautions to take?

AnswerI applaud your decision. Most people just use the engine’s drive skeg to determine water depth. I’ve always wondered why locating mounts couldn’t be placed forward, so you could tell before you ran aground, instead of after. All those thoughts aside, the most important thing to do is sheath — and tie-strap for stability — the transducer cable as it wends its way through the deck holes and bends. The instant the cable cover is compromised, the entire hull becomes a gigantic, mobile ground. That was the good news. If you’re in salt water, that’s the bad news. A little care in installation will keep your boat floating for many years.
