Breast Cancer Survivors Form Bonds, Gain Strength Through Dragon Boat Racing

The canoe surges forward, slicing through the lake.

At Nathan Benderson Park, a 42-foot-long pink canoe bobs in the wake of a passing boat. Inside, 20 women are seated two by two on the narrow benches, each with a paddle just above the water. At the back of the boat, Angela Long, coach and steersperson for the Sarasota-based dragon boat team, Survivors In Sync, starts a stopwatch. The women thrust their paddles into the water in unison and the canoe takes off, slicing through the lake.
