How to remove water from pontoons?

Pontoons are the two large, hollow cylinders that run along the sides of a pontoon boat, they give the boat its buoyancy and stability. While they provide a host of benefits, pontoons can sometimes fill up with water, which can make the boat handle poorly or even cause it to capsize. Therefore, it is critical to remove any water that has accumulated in pontoon tubes immediately. Here are some steps on.

1. Locate the Drain Plugs

The drain plugs are installed in a hole in the pontoon near the rear of the boat. The plugs are usually square or rectangular and made of plastic or metal. The plugs may or may not be threaded, depending on your boat’s make and model. If you cannot find the drain plugs, consult your boat owner’s manual or ask a professional for assistance.

2. Open the Drain Plugs

With a wrench, pliers or your fingers, remove the drain plugs from each of the pontoon tubes. Once the plugs are removed, the water inside the pontoons will start to flow out. Allow the water to drain to completion, and do not be alarmed as water may take some time to flow out.

3. Inspect the Plugs and Tubes

While the water is draining, take a moment to inspect the drain plugs for any damage. If the plugs are damaged, replace them before reinstalling them. Check the inside of the pontoon tubes for any damage, cracks or obstructions that may prevent water from draining properly. If you find any damage, have it repaired before your next outing on the water.

4. Replace the Drain Plugs

Once the pontoon tubes are emptied, carefully replace the drain plugs into each hole. Be sure to screw them back in tightly to prevent water from entering the tubes again.

5. Test the Pontoon Tubes

Finally, take your pontoon boat for a spin to test that you removed all the water from the pontoon tubes. Keep an eye out for any handling issues or unusual behavior. If you notice anything unusual, repeat the process of removing water from the pontoons.

Removing water from pontoons is a simple and straightforward process that can help prevent your boat from capsizing or handling poorly. Always remember to check the pontoon tubes regularly for water accumulation and drain them at the first sign of moisture. With a little vigilance and maintenance, you can enjoy safe and fun outings on your pontoon boat for years to come.
